Leather is a material embedded into our history, it is timeless and transcends the generations. Leathercrafting is the art of creating functional and decorative items from this versatile material. From ancient peoples to the modern crafter, it has remained a valued tradition that can be attributed to several factors.
History
Leather has been used by humans for thousands of years. The earliest known evidence dates back over 7000 years ago. Egypt, Greece and Rome are known to have used this medium for clothing, armor, and accessories. Tanning leather was a skill that was highly regarded and passed down from generation to generation. Families have taken surnames to advertise their skill i.e. Tanner.
Durability and Longevity
Leather was chosen as a valuable material due to its durability and tendency to last for a long amount of time. I always say that my projects will probably outlast me. When properly cared for, leather can last for decades, and sometimes centuries! Leather matures gracefully, developing a beautiful patina that tells the story of its use and care.
Versatility
Leather is such a versatile material that it can be transformed into an amazing variety of products. Take a look around and really notice how many of our everyday items are made from leather. Items include wallets, belts, shoes, keychains, bags, clothing, furniture and many more. As crafters, we can use old techniques combined with new designs and tools to fashion unique and beautiful items to suit todays discerning taste.
Artistry and Craftsmanship
Leathercrafting is not just a practical skill, it is an art form. We take pride in our work, we meticulously shape and stitch our projects together to create items that not only are practical but pleasing to the eye.
